Trends in home decor come and go just like in fashion.  All of the options and ideas can be overwhelming so here is what I suggest.
Stick to basics and neutrals when purchasing investment pieces (couch, bed, etc).  Spend your money on things that will last the test of time (and trend!).
Keep it simple - add the trends in through accessories and accents.
Less is always more.  Don't try all the trends at once!  Pick one or two that you like and inject them into your space.  When it comes to bold and unique statements, a little goes a long way!
